Wildcats continue play in Arizona

On the third day of spring break play the St. Kate's softball team lost 7-5 to Buena Vista (BV) and 10-0 to Cal State San Marcos.

Against BV, St. Kate's trailed 3-1 at the end of the first inning before they fought their way back.

The Wildcats picked up a run in the third and trailed 3-2 heading into the fourth. In the fourth BV picked up a pair of runs in to move ahead 5-2. They tacked on two more in the fifth to open up a 7-2 lead. That is when the Wildcats utilized their largest offensive output of the season to stage a comeback.

The Wildcats picked up three runs in the sixth to make it 7-5. The sixth inning rally started with back-to-back singles by Jessi McGehee and Kaitlyn Frank. After a couple of walks loaded the bases the Wildcats picked up runs with back-to-back sacrifice flies. Unfortunately, that was a close as the Wildcats would get and they were unable to complete the come from behind rally.

Jessica Kniefel and Jessi McGehee each went 2-for-4 in the game. Kniefel scored twice while McGehee, Lisa Jacobs, Teresa Meiners, Beth Freier and Andrea Boser all picked up RBIs for the Wildcats.

Against Cal State San Marcos St. Kate's was unable to generate any significant offensive threats, and lost 10-0 in five innings. Kniefel and Jacobs each recorded a pair of hits for the Wildcats.

After the first six games of play McGehee and Kniefel lead the team with .563 batting averages (9-for 16). McGehee has 1 HR and 4 RBIs while Kniefel has 2 RBIs and 7 stolen bases.

The team has the day off before facing Otterbein and #4 ranked Luther College on Tuesday.
